When Will The PSVR Experience Stop Being Just Experiences?

This week on the podcast Antony and Darren are joined once again by the illustrious James Thomas (@BIGsheep).

It’s been a busy old week in the world of games, with Big Geoff’s Game Awards and Sony’s Playstation Experience 2016. If you missed either of these and want a catch up, or even of you tuned in to these gaming feasts, you’ll hear overviews, opinions and speculations from the guys as they dissect the latest glitz and glamour fests from our beloved industry.

With so much to discuss, a surprising curve ball is thrown into the mix when the elephant in the (virtual playspace) room is addressed by the Sparks – Just when will VR experiences evolve from feeling like mere tasters of something that should be bigger and finally metamorphose into games that feel like they have the depth and the pull of their equivalent 2D counterparts?

Nintendo Are So Hot Right Now, Is It Time To Release The NX?

Join the Sparks once more as we discuss the ins and outs of the week in Games. With Pokemon GO soaring beyond the stratosphere on a rocket propelled rainbow of success Nintendo have announced their next console – perfect timing.

Hang on though, This isn’t the long rumoured and awaited code named NX that Ninty fans have been waiting for with bated breath. Instead, it’s almost as good, a small but perfectly formed mini NES from the beginning of the Nintendo boom way back in 1983 is the next console that we are about to gratefully receive. It’s a great time to announce it as recently, with the boost Pokemon GO has given to the big N, their stocks have only recently surpassed the highs that they reached back when the NES first became available and ushered the name Nintendo into worldwide consciousness as  household name to be forever associated with the gaming characters we love.

With 30 games built in and support for two controllers, the Nintendo Classic Mini looks like it could easily become a welcome edition to gamers young and old who want to relive a slice of how it all started. The games list is not lacking either with a cavalcade of quality titles spanning the lifetime of the legendary home console including favourites such as Bubble Bobble, Excitebike, Donkey Kong, Zelda and of course Mario.

With Nintendo fever at record temperatures, the Sparks wonder if now would be the perfect time for Nintendo to seize hold of this current sensational high riding wave and get some NX announcements out there into the eager gaming community?

At least Nintendo didn’t put on a keynote for the release of their next console and then produce this at E3, I can’t imagine the disappointment from gamers throughout the world as Nintendo’s next console was revealed. If we weren’t all so excited to see more of the NX, it may have made quite a good prank.

Thank goodness they didn’t though eh.

Pokemon GO – Super Successful and Brings People Together, But Can It Last?

Boom! Yep, there it was, the explosion atop an eruption that has been the soaring rise to the heavens that the already beloved Pokemon GO has enjoyed.

Nintendo’s latest mobile game, which has been a hit in every territory it has been released in so far has taken the world by storm. Just arriving in the UK as this is written and opening up the gateway for many more people who didn’t use workarounds to get the game early in Britain who will be just starting to find out what Pokemon GO is all about.

Nintendo seems to have struck gold again with this genius hybrid of augmented reality Pokemon hunting fused with real life geo data and it’s bringing Gamers out into the sunlight in their droves.

Parents are singing the praises of the game, thanking it for getting their kids, who usually never shy away from the safety and darkness of their shuttered video game lair / bedrooms, up, dressed and outside as they brave the twinkling sunlight in search of the eponymous Pokemon. Hordes of players feel the touch of glorious weather upon themselves as the game lures them (and us) further out into the wilds of civilisation where gatherings of like minded Gamers congregate, meet and compare stories of their hunting prowess. People are met, bonds are made and perhaps Nintendo will be responsible for many a friendship blossoming from it’s latest mobile diversion.

Pokemon GO being a runaway success then, can’t really be argued with and it’s great to see the Big N deliver something that seems so overwhelmingly to almost literally sparkle with that Nintendo magic that Gamers love and that they are so renowned for.

The game seems responsible for a massive spike in Nintendo stocks adding 7.5 billion dollars onto their share value since the launch – the biggest spike enjoyed by the company since 1983.

Whilst enjoying discussing the success of this new phenomenon (pokemonemon?)  the sparks ask the question – can it last? Is there enough fuel for the fire to last past the initial novelty of seeing an augmented Snorlax roosting by the local public toilets and can the massive player base be coerced on to keep on playing and more importantly from a business point of view, keep contributing by dipping in to those ever present and ever tempting microtransactions.

A flash in the pan, or the start of a new gaming utopia of connecting people in person outside of their own dwellings?

Time will tell, but at the moment, hey, let’s just enjoy the ride. Listen in and enjoy the chat. Continue reading
