Can Microsoft Escape The Shadow of Sony’s Killer First Party Line-Up?

We’re back baby! After an unavoidable 2 week break the Sparks are back, bringing with them Episode 80 of their unique brand of pure podcast-tastic-ness.

This week the discussion turns to how well 2017 is shaping up for Sony and PS4. Not only with some fantastic existing releases coming in so early in the year but with platform exclusives coming down the line that have the guys very excited. WIth Resident Evil 7 in PSVR, Nioh garnering well deserved praise, Horizon Zero Dawn nearly upon us and many other exclusive titles (some being new IP’s) awaiting us down the road it is, once more, a great time to be a gamer.

If, that is, you own a PS4…But what then, for the Xbox crowd? It really does feel that news of titles to look forward to and anticipate is really quite thin on the ground over at the Microsoft camp and what there is to look forward to just doesn’t feel that it has the marketing build up, the building of hype, the excited desire of anticipation that the PS4 schedule has tapped into.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, Sony have had quiet times too and after a lull, boom! It’s a cavalcade of quality gaming that we are faced with. So the hope surely must be, that yes, it’s quiet over in Xboxville at the moment but that’s because they’re keeping their cards close to their chest, they’re playing the long game, the quiet game and then sometime this year – presumably at E3… Bam! we get hit with some great quality titles that we are going to love to look forward to for both the Xbox as it is now and the Scorpio that waits in the wings like a mad bull, straining at its release date chains that are holding back all that exciting power.

They’ll need a strong line up to compete with PlayStation this year though and the job could be made all the more difficult with Sony off  to such a strong start.

Obviously time will tell and the Sparks are anxious but quietly optimistic that a lull of quiet will be answered with a bevy of exciting titles further down the line. That’s the safest outcome to hope for because otherwise, the landscape does feel a little empty and bleak if you only have an Xbox console and no one wants that. The beauty of competition is the constant striving to deliver spectacle and amazing content form both sides to the consumer and a mega corporation like Microsoft is surely not going to take it’s eye off the ball just yet.

As always, it will be an interesting year.

Why the heck is Lara Croft in that photo and not Nathan Drake? (“one of these things is not like the others” lol)

Not likely, all of Microsoft’s offerings this gen have been average at best. Halo, Gears and Forza are staler than 5 year-old cheese and nobody cares about low-quality reskins like those anymore. If Microsoft want their console to actually sell they’re going to have to start investing in new IP’s and releasing games people actually want to play, not cheap reskins like Halo and Gears every 9 months.

PS4 is always going to clown the Xbox in sales because it’s a far superior console with far superior games. Enough said.
