Bad tidings indeed for all us VR fans chomping at the bit to get our hands on what has been shaping up to be the best VR experience coming our way. It looks like we may have to endure the wait a little longer.
“HTC will offer the first commercial Vive units via a limited quantity of community and developer systems” later this year, “with larger quantities shipping in calendar Q1 2016.”
Rollout to developers has been on going since May and an expectation was set for consumer release in Fall 2015. By the sound of things it will be a very lucky few who will get their hands on the consumer unit before the end of this year, with the main rollout taking place in Q1 2016.
This makes for a 3 horse race in the first quarter of 2016 as far as VR is concerned with Oculus Rift – (PC), Morpheus (PS4) and Vive (PC) all entering the fray at that time. Vive could lose an edge that it had with early release and with all 3 being released it could be a confusing time for the early adopter to decide on a technology.
We will keep you posted.
