Satoru Iwata

Sadly we lost an industry giant, Satoru Iwata, president and CEO of Nintendo, died on Saturday at the age of 55. Nintendo said in a brief press release issued on Monday Japan time that Iwata’s death was related to a bile duct growth, a medical condition which has kept him from traveling outside of Japan in recent years.

Iwata began his career in video games at HAL Laboratory as a programmer in the ’80s, later working his way up the ranks at Nintendo and eventually succeeding longtime president Hiroshi Yamauchi in 2002.

“On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer” – Satoru Iwata
